On Thursday may 22, 2025, A number of bright leaders and creators, including Amb Sileshi Sals Umer gathered at YOU-LEDD with a mission to develop youth led climate action advocacy in climate change. What unfolded wasn’t just a conference, it was a wake-up call.
Highlights of our discussions – Discussions on SDGs and Project management strategies
The conference initially highlighted global initiatives like the SDGs, Africa’s Agenda 2063, and Ethiopia’s 10-Year Plan—which gave us a brief insight on how things stand globally, continent-wide, and here at home. A great takeaway was when the Ambassador said to, “Work and live with intention. Start where you are, and serve your country—it’s your best investment,”. That meant a lot because most of us know the SDGs but don’t even know our own country’s development plans. As the conference progressed it was focused on climate change, specifically SDG13 and others closely related like SDG7. (more information on SDGs can be found here).
Then the participants moved into project management training. They explored why so many projects often fail, key planning steps, how to identify stakeholders, and ways to manage their expectations—especially during unexpected challenges. Working with new teammates added fresh perspectives. They then designed projects and received feedback. This shows how much you can learn in a short time about turning ideas into action.
Youth-led advocacy: The future is for anyone ready to claim it
The most powerful takeaway came from the youth-led climate change advocacy discussions. Young people don’t just participate in Safelight’s initiatives – they drive them, take pride in them, and form the very foundation of progress (more about current and future Safelight youth-centered initiatives here). The environment radiated warmth and respect, and it made you genuinely feel valued, supported, and challenged to excel – because that potential lives within you.
We constantly hear about fierce competition and limited opportunities—both real to some extent. But the real gap lies in skilled, committed individuals. True inspiration isn’t just watching success stories. It’s when accomplished people look at you and say, “I believe in you.” Then they prove it by investing their time and resources. If you’re ready to do the work, opportunities exist. The time is now. The support is here. Take the first step—success is within reach.
