Strengthening policies and partnerships for Youth Empowerment

The KULEHE Project launch marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing conversation around youth empowerment in Ethiopia. A key focus of the launch was the government’s efforts to improve policies, initiatives, and collaborations aimed at addressing the challenges young people face in the workforce and entrepreneurial landscape.

It put a spotlight on the plans, actions, and teamwork designed to help young people thrive. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Sileshi “Sals” Umer, speaking for the Ethiopian Youth Council, talked about the group’s work in pushing for rules and programs. Which that help young people, especially in finding jobs and starting businesses.

How the Government Can Help Young Entrepreneurship

When inquired about the government’s efforts to support young businesses, Ambassador Sileshi emphasized the critical need to advocate for effective policies and build robust partnerships. He highlighted that creating favorable regulations and fostering strong connections between the government, private sector, and stakeholders. which is the key to providing the necessary support for young entrepreneurs and youth empowerment to thrive.

 He pointed to the difference between what skills people have and what jobs need, and also the high number of unemployed people in cities, as big problems. it’s important for the government, companies, and other groups to work together to create good jobs, support businesses that last, and give access to money to start new things. Local governments need to be involved.

Looking ahead, it’s clear that getting everyone on board is key to making real change.

He also brought up that lots of young people want to be business owners, but they run into big problems, like not having enough money, not getting the right training, and dealing with too much paperwork. Because of this, the government is working hard to:

• Improve the rules to make it easier for young people to start and run businesses.
• Increase efforts to make sure young people’s voices are heard when decisions are made.
• Help young people get money and resources through good partnerships.

He emphasized a big issue: many companies can’t find workers with the right skills. This is a real roadblock to growth. Fixing this skills gap will require focused training and education programs.
